Video games are definitely a form of art. Complex design leads to gorgeous scenery and settings within games. Take, for example, Machinarium. Machinarium was released in October of 2009 and has since been heralded as one of the best indie games available and has also won many awards for its soundtrack, art direction, and visual design. Today, Machinarium is known more for its artwork than actual game play. What prevents beautiful video games such as Machinarium from being considered true examples of art, I feel, is its tangibility or lack there of. With art you can touch it, feel it, and create it with your own hands. However, with video games everything exists digitally. You cannot touch your nose to the screen and see brush strokes- all you will see are pixels. What is similar, however, between tangible art and video game art is the appreciation of those who view it.
